Hail Mary Month

Hail Mary
Hail Mary
The don’t call it “Hail Mary” for nothing As usual, at the end of each school year, a bunch of families with a child in Hail Mary Mode email me something like this, “Uh-oh! I don’t think my child can pull this off! What do we do?” Here’s the pattern for these Middle and High Schoolers:
  1. They got behind on their school work.
  2. Grades plummeted.
  3. In April, parents suddenly see that things are falling apart.
  4. Children tell their parents, “Relax. Leave me alone. I’ve got this! Just trust me.”
  5. Parents know it’s not about “trust”, it’s about the track record, which shows that their child is not realistic about what needs to be done to dig themselves out of this pit.
  6. Despite best intentions and parental “nagging”, these students don’t get it together in time.
  7. Before you know it, school’s over and they failed classes.
  8. Now we deal with things like summer school, retaking classes in the fall, “recovery” credits, lower GPA. All of these ultimately cause more frustration and resistance towards school, and a cascade of deeper consequences.
  9. The next year begins, and usually the patterns repeat in the fall: 1. Strong start 2. Fall behind 3. Swim upstream for a stressful end to the semester 4. Repeat.
These kids need a plan that helps them finish as strong as possible AND have better tools for the upcoming year. How I do to help the students I coach deal with “Hail Mary mode”?
  1. Create a strategy based on what actually works with these kids.
  2. Tell them what to do specifically, step by step.
  3. Support them to do it.
  4. Teach parents how to help rather than push them away.
  5. Break it down into manageable chunks.
  6. Educate parents and kids on what’s going on in the brain.
  7. Help my students in a playful manner while employing a “No B.S.” rapport.
