Video transcript
My name is Seth Perler. Iām an executive function coach based out of Colorado, and I help struggling students navigate this thing called education so they can have a great life.
This video is about Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.
Tomorrow is March 10th, and during the primaries we have Bernie and Biden in a close race. Biden is ahead right now, but I believe in my heart that Bernie is the best thing for kids, for our future, and for the future of our children in this country.
Iām going to tell you why I believe that.
First of all, my life has been dedicated ā quite literally ā to serving kids for over 20 years. Almost everything I do revolves around helping children in some way.
I believe I was put on this earth to do this.
I struggled as a kid. Iām very lucky to be here today because of the learning challenges and other struggles I went through. Now I have a fantastic life because I received the support I needed.
Our neurodiverse kids ā kids who donāt fit neatly into the box ā desperately need support. If they donāt get the help they need, they are at risk of not having a happy, healthy, and successful future. They may struggle to pay bills, maintain healthy relationships, manage mental health, succeed in school, or find meaningful careers that align with their strengths, talents, and interests.
These kids need the right support, and as a country, we are dropping the ball.
Honestly, itās heartbreaking to me.
I donāt talk about politics often, but it astounds me that in 2020 we spend around $700 billion a year on the military and only about one-tenth of that on education. That shows what we value.
I want our children growing up in a world that values them, invests in them, and genuinely cares about their future ā not one that constantly cuts funding to education and support systems.
It hurts my soul knowing we are failing our kids in so many ways.
So Iām going to talk for a few minutes about Bernie Sanders and why I support him. I donāt know whether this will influence anyone, but if youāre undecided, maybe it will help you think things through.
This race is close. Tomorrow is probably a make-or-break day in the primaries, so itās one of the last chances to make your voice heard.
I support Bernie because I believe he fights for people.
Statistically speaking, Iām probably already over halfway through my life. Iāll likely be okay. I have a good career and a good life.
But Iām deeply concerned about the future these kids are inheriting.
This video is for them.
Iām also a huge nerd when it comes to politics. For years Iāve spent a lot of time researching objective news sources and digging deeply into political issues, so this perspective is something Iāve thought through carefully.
First, Bernie has spent decades fighting for ordinary people. His record is remarkable.
Thereās no ego in it. Heās not trying to look cool or powerful. Heās not driven by corruption or image. He genuinely fights for people with integrity.
I also respect that he doesnāt rely on cheap insults, personal attacks, or political theatrics. Thereās so much pettiness and sensationalism in politics, and Bernie generally avoids stooping to that level.
Heās compassionate, empathetic, and present with people.
I want leadership that models kindness and caring for our youth.
Universal healthcare is another huge reason I support him.
Of course wealthy interests and corporate industries will fight against universal healthcare. Of course there will be arguments about why it ācanātā happen.
I donāt care.
I want the kids I work with ā and all children in this country ā to have excellent healthcare without constantly worrying about whether they can afford it.
Healthcare should not be a source of fear for children or families.
I also strongly support the Green New Deal.
I want these kids to inherit a healthy planet.
My generation and the generations before us have often treated the Earth as something to exploit rather than respect. I believe we are deeply interconnected with the planet and with one another.
I want future generations to grow up in a sustainable world that values and protects the environment.
Naturally, industries that profit from fossil fuels will resist these ideas aggressively. But that doesnāt change what I believe is right.
I also support Bernieās vision for affordable education.
College has become heavily commercialized. There is enormous profit involved, and many institutions benefit from the current system staying exactly as it is.
I want my students to have access to higher education without crushing financial barriers.
Housing is another issue that matters deeply to me.
I see more and more people struggling financially and experiencing homelessness. Many neurodiverse students and individuals with executive function challenges are especially vulnerable to housing insecurity.
I support policies that aim to make housing more accessible.
Another issue I strongly support is free childcare and universal preschool.
Bernie is one of the few candidates who consistently talks about the importance of early childhood development from birth through age four.
Imagine how different the world could be if every child had access to quality preschool and childcare.
And to all the single parents out there working incredibly hard to support your kids ā I see you. I know how hard youāre working. Affordable childcare would make a huge difference for so many families.
I also deeply respect Bernieās long-standing support for public education, disability rights, LGBTQ+ rights, womenās rights, and broader human rights.
He has consistently fought for marginalized communities throughout his career.
One issue especially close to my heart is Native American rights.
I used to live and teach on the Navajo Nation, and I developed a deep love and respect for Native communities and cultures. I appreciate that Bernie openly discusses Native American issues and includes them among the priorities on his platform.
One thing I also want to address is media coverage.
In my opinion, corporate media outlets often underreport Bernieās successes while overemphasizing negative narratives about him.
Large corporations and wealthy interests naturally resist candidates who threaten their financial interests. News organizations are also businesses, and financial incentives influence coverage.
Thatās why I encourage people to research the issues themselves rather than relying entirely on headlines or television personalities.
Visit Bernieās website. Read his policies. Think carefully about the future you want for your children ā not just one year from now, but 10, 20, or 30 years from now.
I personally believe Bernie is a rare and special political figure.
Heās the underdog, but he is incredibly passionate about improving peopleās lives.
Yes, it would be difficult for him to pass many policies. There would absolutely be resistance and obstruction.
But movements matter.
Even when large changes take time, putting new ideas into motion can create positive long-term change and shift the direction of the country.
I also donāt personally buy into arguments that Biden is somehow āmore electable.ā I think a lot of those arguments are driven by establishment narratives and corporate media framing.
People say things like:
āOur country would never elect a socialist.ā
But I donāt see Bernieās ideas as radical in a negative way. I see them as humane.
I want children in this country to have the best possible chance at healthy, meaningful, successful lives.
And I sincerely believe Bernie Sanders is the candidate most capable of moving us toward that future.
Again, my name is Seth Perler. Iām an executive function coach based out of Colorado, and my life is dedicated to helping struggling students build fantastic futures.
I want kids to grow into adults who use their strengths, passions, talents, and gifts in meaningful careers and purposeful lives. I want them to have healthy relationships, good mental health, financial stability, and opportunities to thrive.
There is no reason, in 2020, that we cannot create a society that supports people better.
We have enough resources. We have enough knowledge.
People should not have to struggle the way so many currently do.
And I believe Bernie Sanders would help move us in a better direction.
Have a fantastic day. Iāll see you soon.
